BIOSKETCH:
Paul Hartman came to the University of Illinois in 1966, joining the faculty of the Department of Economics as an Assistant Professor of Economics and Labor and Industrial Relations. He progressed through the academic ranks to achieve full professorship in 1972.
Professor Hartman taught coursework primarily in Human Resource Management to graduate students and the economics of labor markets and trade unions to graduate and undergraduate students.
His administrative service was extensive and included membership on many university, college and department committees. He served as Chairman for the Department of Economics from 1972 to 1976. In the summer of 1991, he served as Acting Dean for the College of Commerce and Business Administration, and additionally as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 1990 to 1992.
Under Professor Hartman’s leadership, the Department of Economics was recognized as one of the top economics departments in the nation. While he was Associate Dean, he helped develop closer ties with the Community of European Management Schools, including the Wirtschafts Universitaet of Vienna, the Copenhagen School of Business and the Business Faculty at Louvain, Belgium.
As a consultant in 1972, he worked with the Executive Office of the President of the United States, on the Pay Board of the Economics Stabilization Program.
In December of 1992, at a recognition dinner held by the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations, Professor Hartman would be honored by his colleagues for his academic and administrative accomplishments, and his highly distinguished service to the field of economics.
Professor Hartman died of cancer on January 24, 1993 in his home in Urbana.
