BIOSKETCH:

Emmett B. McNatt was born on September 23, 1902 in Aurora, Missouri. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and subsequently enrolled at Cornell University as a master’s student. For over a decade, he worked as an instructor at Cornell while he earned his master’s and doctorate degrees. He left Cornell in 1934 for Alfred University, where he would stay for a single year before moving to the University of North Carolina.

Dr. McNatt came to the University of Illinois in 1939, joining the faculty in the Department of Economics as an Associate Professor. During his 29-year tenure at Illinois, Professor McNatt was a topmost authority on labor economics and labor relations. He would publish many articles and reviews, and his peers and students frequently consulted upon him as the department's senior faculty member in his chosen field of study.

In addition to his successful teaching career, McNatt also engaged in numerous public service activities. During World War II, he served as the Director of Wage Stabilization for the National War Labor Board in Chicago. McNatt was also a member of the University Senate, and was an active participant in multiple university-wide committees and advisory councils.

Dr. McNatt left the University of Illinois in 1968, and moved back to his hometown in Missouri. He was elected mayor of Aurora in the early 1970s, and continued serving on the city council once his term ended. Emmett McNatt was deceased on August 11, 1974.
