BIOSKETCH:

John Trout Rader III was born on August 23, 1938 in Alice, Texas. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Texas in 1959, and subsequently completed both his master’s and doctorate degrees at Yale University in 1960 and 1963, respectively. Dr. Rader then took a position at the University of Missouri at Columbia for two years.

Dr. Rader accepted an assistant professorship at the University of Illinois in 1964. His time at Illinois was very brief; a mere two years after arriving, he moved to Washington University in St. Louis where he would teach for over 20 years. He was promoted to a full professorship there in 1970.

It was around this time that Dr. Rader began developing multiple sclerosis, which began interfering with his research. Nevertheless, Dr. Rader continued to research, teach and write about economics at Washington University until the illness took his life in 1991. He was 52 years old.

During his short but successful career as an economist, he earned a reputation for being an impressive academic scholar. He wrote three books in the 1970s that had a large impact on the research of theoretical microeconomics and general equilibrium theory. In addition to his books, he also published 29 articles in 15 different economic journals on a diverse range of topics, from consumer analysis to international trade to public choice.

His many students also knew him as an excellent economics teacher. As an instructor, his enthusiasm for economics was contagious to students, and his passion for the subject showed through in each lecture he gave. Dr. Rader inspired many undergraduates to pursue an academic career in economics, and many of his graduate students became well-known economists themselves.
