Fall Details & Restrictions

Fall 2023

In order to provide declared Economics/Econometrics/CS+Economics majors with courses to fulfill their degree requirements, we allow them to have Priority Registration. Restrictions are placed on select courses to ensure they are given first choice.

Please note: Instructors are not able to grant overrides--all override requests are managed as described below.

Restriction by Course

Economics  Class Restriction Details Date Available
102

The majority of seats restricted to Freshmen and Sophomores and some seats restricted to incoming Econ/Econometrics/CS+Econ majors through New Student Registration. Instructors are not able to grant overrides.

  • April 3rd: a limited number of unrestricted seats will be available
  • Monday, April 17th: All sections will be restricted to students with freshman and sophomore standing.
  • June 30: Some sections are restricted to Economics/Econometrics/CS+Econ students with freshman and sophomore standing. Check Course Explorer for restrictions.
  • August 14-17: A limited number of emergency overrides will be granted through the 102/103 Override Request Form (available Aug 14 at 12:01 am - Aug 17 at 12:00 pm). Override requests will be reviewed and responses sent out by August 18. Priority will be given to graduating seniors whose programs require Econ 102 or other "emergency" situations requiring the class this term. 
  • August 21: Any unused overrides and all remaining seats will be opened without restrictions.

103

202, 203, 302 Never restricted. Open to all majors/minors. N/A
303 Restricted to Econ majors and other students listed below. Other students can request an override using the Override Request form here (available August 1-7 at 12pm). Course prerequisites must be met. All remaining seats will be allocated through the override process to students who meet prerequisites.

400's

Always restricted to Econ majors. 

The Econ 400 level Course Override Request Form will be available August 1-7 at 12pm. Override requests will be reviewed and responses sent out by August 8. Priority will be given to graduating seniors whose programs require a 400 level Econ course. All remaining seats will be allocated through the override process to students who meet prerequisites. 

Exceptions listed below.

* Econ 102 and 103 Options if course reaches maximum capacity:

  •  Students can take Econ 103 before taking 102
  •  Students can take the Econ 102 and/or Econ 103 Proficiency Exams to earn course credit
  •  Students may take Econ 102 or 103 in the Winter or Summer terms
  •  Generally, student demand decreases for both courses in the Spring semester, making it easier to get a seat in either or both courses then.

Restriction by Student Group

However, we do allow certain student groups and majors to have earlier access. Please read below for specific date information. All restrictions are removed manually, and we are unable to guarantee an exact time the classes are available. If you do not fall into a category below, you can complete our Fall 2023 Override Request above for consideration.

Students Declaring Economics Please review the Declaration Criteria for our majors & minor. Upcoming opportunities to declare are August 14 - September 1. More information, including the Curriculum Change Form, is here. Once you declare, you will have course access within 24 hours. 
CS+ ECON Applicants

Please email our office (send your UIN, Name and 2 requested courses- using your @illinois.edu email).

Dual-Degrees (approved) or Triple-Majors

Please email our office (send your UIN, Name, and requested courses- using your @illinois.edu email).

We will verify you are declared and will email you confirmation when overrides have been processed.

Please meet with an Econ Advisor often to confirm your degree requirements.

Monday, April 3
LAS & ACE Exchange Students

Email our office (send your UIN, Name, Exchange program, and requested courses- using your @illinois.edu email).

*If your program requires a 4-credit Econ course, please indicate this in your email.

NON- LAS & ACE  Exchange Students

We are unable to guarantee overrides into restricted courses.

You may talk with your Illinois Program Advisor to see if there is a prior agreement with ECON regarding courses.

Monday, July 17

ECON Minor Students

Approved Minor Students will be able to register for restricted courses on this date. Ensure that you have been approved for the Econ Minor, and your College has added the minor to your record (this may take 2-4 weeks to process).

Monday, April 17

MATH Majors

ECON 303 and ECON 471 will be available for registration on this date.

Graduating seniors who have difficulty adding these courses can contact Math Advising at mathadvising@illinois.edu as soon as possible and they will coordinate an override with our office.

Thursday, April 20

Industrial Engineering - Economics & Finance Track ECON 303 and ECON 471 will be available for registration on this date. Please email our office with if you receive a registration error, and include a screen shot of the error. Thursday, April 20
ACE Majors Please contact your Departmental Advisor, Caroline Helton at chelton@illinois.edu, as soon as possible and she will coordinate an override with our office.

ECON 303 will be available for registration on this date.

Graduating seniors who have difficulty adding these courses can contact ASRM Advising at asrm-advising@illinois.edu as soon as possible and they will coordinate an override with our office.

Thursday, April 20

Other Majors & Additional Information If you do not fall under an above category, you can still request access to our restricted courses by completing an Override Request Form (see above). No overrides provided into full sections. Available in August
