About Econ Advising

Students are not assigned an specific Academic Advisor in Economics as we believe it is important students have the choice on who to meet. You may select your advisor based on availability, interest, or any other factor, meeting with the same advisor multiple times, or seeing different advisors within our office. We keep notes about each advising appointment and save any completed documents, so we always have the best information for your academic journey. Find out more about our Undergraduate Advisors

Your advisor will discuss your degree progress, course schedule, and provide you with additional guidance during Scheduled Advising Appointments. They will also assist in answering quick questions or completing forms during Express Advising.

You can expect your advisor to:

• Keep appointments with you (or have staff call or email you to cancel or reschedule if absolutely necessary).
• Provide accurate and specific information in a professional manner.
• Encourage and support your individual pursuits, providing you with resources and direction.
• Listen without prejudice, offer suggestions, and discuss strategies.
• Be honest and keep everything confidential.
• Make you feel comfortable and supported.
• Guide you in your decision-making process.
• Be an accessible resource, ally, and mentor.

We meet with students one-on-one during your appointment in our private offices. Students may determine if they would like the office door to remain open or be closed during the appointment.

In order for you to get the most out of your advising experience, we ask that you:

• Meet with your advisor at least once a semester by Scheduling an Advising Appointment.
• Make and keep appointments (or email to change or cancel them when necessary, with advanced notice).
• Prepare for appointments by researching your concerns and writing down questions.
• Explore options for your class schedule before meeting with your advisor so you may discuss.
• Ask for resources and use these services.
• Read all newsletters and emails thoroughly to ensure you have the latest news and information.
• Be open in discussing your personal adjustment to Illinois, your academic progress, and your study habits.
• Let your advisor know if you experience any problems or barriers, providing as much information as your feel comfortable doing, so we may assist you to the best of our ability.
• Make informed decisions related to your major and career plans and set realistic goals.
• Bring a personal record of your progress toward your goals with you to all appointments.
• Keep track of important dates and deadlines for the academic year.
